Zambia Leads Continental Diplomacy with Launch of League of African Ambassadors
Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Honourable Mulambo Haimbe, S.C., MP, this morning officiated at the launch of the League of African Ambassadors (LAA) on behalf of the President of the Republic of Zambia, Mr Hakainde Hichilema, at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka.
Delivering President Hichilema’s remarks, Honourable Haimbe expressed gratitude to both serving and former diplomats for their initiative in forming the League.
He described the launch as a historic milestone that provides a new platform for men and women who have represented their nations with pride and distinction across the world and in multilateral institutions.
Honourable Haimbe observed that the establishment of the LAA presents an opportunity to harness a wealth of institutional memory and experience that can serve as a dynamic think tank.
He added that such a platform will provide valuable insights to inform and enrich policymaking across the African continent, particularly in advancing economic development.
Speaking at the same event, His Excellency Ambassador Ominyi Nwanne, President of the League of African Ambassadors, stated that the formation of the LAA was rooted in diplomacy, unity, and legacy.
He emphasised that African ambassadors, both past and present, should be viewed as valuable resources whose extensive networks can contribute significantly to the continent’s development and global engagement.
The League of African Ambassadors has been established to preserve and promote Africa’s diplomatic heritage through mentorship, documentation, and storytelling. It also aims to strengthen continental unity by fostering collaboration between retired and serving ambassadors, and to support peacebuilding and conflict resolution through diplomatic and advisory roles.
The ceremony concluded with the raising of the LAA flag for the first time, marking the official birth of the continental platform at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre.
