India Donates Sewing Machines to Empower Zambian Women

The Government of India has donated 500 sewing machines and 100 embroidery machines to the Office of the First Lady of the Republic of Zambia, in a gesture aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and supporting women’s empowerment initiatives.

The handover ceremony, held in Lusaka, was attended by First Lady Mrs Mutinta Hichilema, who expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Government of India for the generous contribution.

She described the donation as a “symbol of the excellent relations between Zambia and India” and a testament to the shared vision of both nations in promoting empowerment and sustainable development.

Mrs Hichilema noted that Zambia highly values its longstanding partnership with India, built upon shared political, cultural, and social aspirations, as well as mutual commitment to democracy and good governance.

“The donation will add significant progress to the initiatives that my Office has embarked on to support women and youths across Zambia. These machines will help equip them with practical skills for sustainable livelihoods,” the First Lady said, assuring that her Office would ensure the equipment reaches beneficiaries who will make the most of them.

His Excellency Mr Alok Ranjan Jha, High Commissioner of India to Zambia, said the donation represents India’s affection and enduring friendship with Zambia. He highlighted India’s commitment to sharing its development experience with fellow nations in the Global South, including Zambia.

Ms Etambuyu Anamela Gundersen, Permanent Secretary for International Relations and Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, commended the initiative, noting that it aligns with Government’s efforts to promote women’s economic empowerment through skills development and innovation.

She reiterated the Government’s commitment to strengthening relations with India for the mutual benefit of both countries, emphasising that partnerships of this nature play a crucial role in fostering inclusive growth and self-reliance.
