Husqvarna Empowers Farmers with Smart Soil Preparation Techniques for Better Yields
Before a single seed is planted, the foundation for every healthy crop begins beneath the surface in the soil. This timeless truth, passed from traditional farmers to modern growers, remains essential to achieving strong yields and sustainable farming.
Brad Barthorpe, Sales Manager for Distributors Africa at Husqvarna South Africa, said effective soil preparation is more than just clearing land. It involves understanding the terrain, using the right tools, and creating conditions that allow crops to thrive.
“If you treat your soil well, it will reward you with healthy plants and stronger yields,” said Barthorpe.
He explained that proper ground preparation depends on soil condition, timing, and technique, whether for small-scale farmers, gardeners, or large-field cultivators. Among his practical tips, Barthorpe advised farmers not to dig deeper than necessary, as healthy soil develops in layers. Turning just the top 5 to 8 centimetres allows nutrients, air, and water to circulate freely without damaging structure.
Timing also matters. Working the soil when it is moist but not wet prevents clumping and compaction. A simple squeeze test can help determine readiness: the soil should hold its shape lightly and crumble when pressed.
For compacted or poorly draining soil, Barthorpe suggested deeper tilling with a rear-tine tiller to break through hard layers and restore aeration. He added that consistency is vital, recommending straight lines and steady passes to avoid uneven ground and erosion, especially on slopes.
He also highlighted the benefits of no-dig methods, where compost, mulch, and other organic matter are layered on top to enrich the soil naturally. “Over time, earthworms and microbes will do the hard work for you,” he noted.
Safety, according to Barthorpe, must remain a top priority. Users should clear the area of debris before tilling and wear proper protective gear. Modern Husqvarna machines, he said, are equipped with advanced safety features such as adjustable speeds and ergonomic balance.
“Healthy soil is the starting point of every harvest,” Barthorpe concluded. “With the right timing, techniques, and tools like those from Husqvarna, land preparation becomes an investment rather than a chore.”
