Zambia Unveils Legal Hub to Strengthen Wildlife Conservation
The Government has launched the Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) Legal Hub, reaffirming its commitment to balancing wildlife conservation with food security and community wellbeing.
Minister of Tourism Rodney Sikumba, who officiated at the launch in Lusaka, said the hub reflects Government’s dedication to harmonising environmental protection with socio-economic needs.
“The established legal hub will serve as a critical resource for stakeholders across various sectors, including wildlife, land, food security, animal production and health, environment, forestry, and tourism,” said Mr Sikumba. “It will promote informed decision-making, policy development, and sustainable practices that benefit both wildlife and communities.”
The Minister also acknowledged the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) for its technical input during the review of the Zambia Wildlife Act No.14 of 2015, noting that their contributions informed the creation of the legal hub.
Attorney General Mulilo Kabesha, State Counsel, reaffirmed Government’s resolve to ensure that Zambia’s treasured wildlife resources are managed sustainably, legally, and responsibly.
“It is a key priority for this Government to strengthen legal governance and promote the rule of law while ensuring that communities equitably benefit from the nation’s natural wealth,” he said.
FAO Representative to Zambia, Ms Suze Filipini, commended the Government for its leadership in environmental governance. “The launch of this legal hub symbolises Zambia’s commitment to sustainable resource management. It will act not only as a repository of legal knowledge but also as a catalyst for dialogue, reform, and informed decision-making within the wildlife sector and beyond,” she noted.
