Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe Airport Launches Aerobridges to Elevate Passenger Experience

Zambia Airports Corporation Limited (ZACL) has officially commissioned Passenger Boarding Bridges (Aerobridges) at Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport (SMKIA), marking a significant milestone in the modernisation of Zambia’s aviation infrastructure.

The aerobridges became operational following approval from the Zambia Civil Aviation Authority (ZCAA), after extensive staff training, docking trials, and safety compliance checks. The development is expected to enhance passenger comfort, improve operational efficiency, and streamline aircraft turnaround times.

The facility includes one bay for wide-bodied aircraft such as the Boeing 777-300, 787, 767, and Airbus A350/A340, and two bays for narrow-bodied aircraft, including the Boeing 737-900, Airbus A319/A320, and Embraer E170/E190/E195 series. These upgrades reduce the reliance on buses and ramp staff for remote boarding, improving both efficiency and passenger safety.

Speaking at the operationalisation ceremony, ZACL Managing Director Mr Urvesh Desai said: “The commissioning of aerobridges at SMKIA marks a proud moment for Zambia’s aviation sector. This milestone strengthens passenger comfort, operational excellence, and airline efficiency, reflecting our commitment to positioning Zambia as a competitive regional aviation and tourism hub.”

ZCAA Director General Captain Derrick Luembe praised the initiative, highlighting its role in enhancing passenger safety, comfort, and accessibility while supporting the National Civil Aviation Strategy for modernisation and service excellence.

The launch of the aerobridges at SMKIA reinforces Zambia’s drive to provide world-class airport facilities that meet global aviation standards, catering to increasing passenger volumes and diverse aircraft types.
