President Hichilema Reaffirms Strong Partnership with the Church in Advancing Zambia’s Health Sector

President Hakainde Hichilema has reaffirmed the Zambian Government’s strong partnership with the Churches Health Association of Zambia (CHAZ), describing it as a vital ally in the country’s pursuit of universal healthcare.

Speaking when he officiated at the 47th CHAZ General Council held in the Waterfalls area of Chongwe District, President Hichilema commended CHAZ for its steadfast commitment to delivering healthcare, particularly in under-served and hard-to-reach communities.

“The Government deeply values CHAZ as a trusted partner. Its sacrifices and commitment to health provision are evident across the country,” President Hichilema said.

He acknowledged the crucial role faith-based health institutions play in upholding Christian values while addressing national health needs, adding that such humanitarian work must continue, especially at a time when global funding to health and social sectors is declining.

The President reaffirmed Government’s commitment to the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Health and CHAZ, noting that the agreement should be expanded to include additional areas of collaboration that can further strengthen the healthcare system.

President Hichilema also highlighted the importance of domestic resource mobilisation within the health sector to ensure sustainability and independence from external funding.

“We must increase investment in healthcare, including infrastructure, because without a healthy population, there can be no economic development,” he stressed.

The Head of State further condemned the theft of medicines and medical supplies, warning that such offences will not be tolerated as Government moves to strengthen laws to curb the vice.

He called on the Ministry of Health to enhance efficiency in the distribution of medicines to ensure all health facilities nationwide receive timely supplies.

“Medicines must reach every health facility on time—because every delay costs lives,” he added.

President Hichilema concluded his address by urging unity and collaboration between Government, the Church, and citizens in building a healthier and more prosperous Zambia, saying: “May God bless our country.”
