ZRA Seizes 25,200 Bottles of Smuggled Alcohol at Kazungula Border
The Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has intercepted a truck carrying 2,100 cases, equivalent to 25,200 bottles, of smuggled alcoholic beverages at the Kazungula One Stop Border Post (OSBP), resulting in an estimated revenue loss of over K7.7 million.
The seizure occurred on 3 October 2025 when the truck entered the customs control zone. The driver presented documents claiming the consignment contained 1,767 packages of panel boards, rain boots, gloves, and dust bins. However, the vigilance of ZRA officers led to a scan of the truck, revealing it was laden with alcohol destined for Lusaka.
Further investigations revealed that the importer’s Taxpayer Identification Number (TPIN) was not registered for any taxes. Both the vehicle and the alcohol have been seized under Sections 141 and 159 of the Customs and Excise Act.
ZRA emphasised that smuggling not only deprives the economy of vital revenue but also endangers public safety and undermines honest traders. “Smuggling hurts honest businesses that follow the rules. We are determined to combat these illegal activities and urge the public to report any smuggling,” said Oliver Nzala, ZRA Corporate Communications Manager.
Nzala added that legal trade remains profitable and sustainable. “Traders who operate legitimately cannot compete fairly with smugglers. Reporting smuggling helps create a level playing field, ensuring that all traders prosper honestly,” he said.
He further stressed the importance of taxes for national development. “Roads, hospitals, schools, and bursaries for university students are all funded through taxes. Smuggling hinders development, it is like cutting the branch you are sitting on,” Nzala warned.
With the holiday season approaching, ZRA called for heightened vigilance against smuggled alcoholic beverages and other goods. The Authority reiterated that anyone caught smuggling faces severe penalties, including possible prosecution.
