President Hichilema Calls for Digital Platforms to Accurately Value African Economies

President Hakainde Hichilema has urged African nations to develop digital platforms capable of accurately measuring the true size of their economies, arguing that existing global assessment tools often undervalue the continent’s economic performance.

Delivering the keynote address at the Third Digital Government Africa Summit in Chongwe District, President Hichilema said that more precise economic measurement would strengthen Africa’s position in high-value global transactions and attract greater investment.

He emphasised that the success of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) hinges on the adoption of digital technologies and called for the creation of a single African identification credential to facilitate seamless movement and access across borders.

President Hichilema also announced Zambia’s decision to field Engineer Kezias Kazuba Mwale for the position of Secretary-General of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU), with elections set to take place in Abuja next year.

Speaking at the same event, Technology and Science Minister Felix Mutati highlighted that technology is most powerful when it connects people and builds bridges between communities. He noted that digital connectivity is enabling rural populations to engage in financial transactions and access services more easily.

Smart Zambia National Coordinator Percy Chinyama added that the summit has created a vital platform for collaboration, bringing together delegates from over 26 countries to explore partnerships in digital governance.

Meanwhile, Visa’s Vice President and Group Head for Africa, Aida Diarra, commended President Hichilema for his visionary leadership in promoting digital inclusion, saying the Zambian government has empowered citizens through innovative digital solutions that facilitate everyday transactions and access to public services.

The Digital Government Africa Summit 2025, themed “Accelerating Digital Transformation for E-Government”, reaffirms Zambia’s commitment to driving Africa’s digital transformation and economic integration.

“By prioritising digital advancement, we can unlock greater economic growth and improve the quality of life for all Zambians,” President Hichilema stated, calling on African leaders to continue working together to build a more connected and prosperous continent.
