CAF President Motsepe Commends FAZ for Promoting Unity in Zambian Football

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) President, Dr Patrice Motsepe, has praised the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) for its ongoing efforts to promote unity and peace among stakeholders within the country’s football fraternity.

According to FAZ General Secretary Machacha Shepande, Dr Motsepe made the remarks during the recently concluded COSAFA meeting, held on the sidelines of the 47th CAF Ordinary General Assembly.

Dr Motsepe commended the FAZ leadership under President Keith Mweemba for making positive strides in reconciling and uniting the football community. He particularly highlighted FAZ’s decision to involve football legend Kalusha Bwalya in its activities as a meaningful gesture towards inclusion and reconciliation.

“The CAF President is impressed with the efforts being made to bring all stakeholders together. He pointed out that the inclusion of Kalusha Bwalya demonstrates a genuine desire to restore harmony and unity in our game,” said Shepande.

Dr Motsepe also lauded the rapid growth of women’s football in Zambia, citing the international success of Barbra Banda and Racheal Kundananji as evidence of the country’s emerging global talent. He encouraged FAZ to continue investing in grassroots development and to create more opportunities for young girls to take part in the sport.

Since his election in May 2025, President Mweemba has made unity a central pillar of his administration. Shepande emphasised that FAZ remains committed to involving all key figures in shaping the future of Zambian football.

“Our administration has prioritised involving all football legends and former FAZ presidents in the running of the game. We believe that everyone who has contributed to Zambian football has a role to play in its future,” he said.

He further revealed that during the FIFA World Cup qualifier between Zambia and Morocco held at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola, FAZ invited all former FAZ presidents, general secretaries, and football legends to attend the match.

“While many attended, some declined without acknowledgment or apology. However, this will not discourage us. We shall continue to extend a hand of unity to everyone who loves the game,” Mr Shepande added.

The Football Association of Zambia reaffirmed its commitment to building an inclusive and harmonious football environment that reflects the nation’s passion for the sport.
