Zambia Backs Malawi’s New Leadership at Presidential Inauguration

Zambia’s Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Reuben Mtolo, has arrived in Blantyre, Malawi, to represent President Hakainde Hichilema at the inauguration ceremony of President-elect Professor Peter Mutharika.

Hon. Mtolo’s presence at the event underscores Zambia’s strong commitment to regional cooperation, diplomacy, and democratic solidarity within Southern Africa. The participation of the Zambian delegation reflects the country’s continued support for peaceful political transitions and its desire to strengthen bilateral and multilateral ties across the region.

Speaking ahead of the inauguration, officials emphasised that Minister Mtolo’s visit provides an opportunity to engage with African leaders on issues of mutual interest, particularly agricultural development, intra-African trade, and regional growth initiatives.

Zambia and Malawi share a long-standing relationship rooted in history, culture, and economic cooperation. Both nations continue to collaborate closely under the Southern African Development Community (SADC) framework to advance shared priorities such as food security, sustainable agriculture, and cross-border trade.

The Zambian Government has reaffirmed that regional engagement remains central to its foreign policy, aligning with President Hichilema’s vision of strengthening partnerships that drive inclusive economic growth and stability.

“The Minister’s attendance at this inauguration symbolises Zambia’s unwavering dedication to regional unity and shared progress,” the Ministry of Agriculture stated. “Such engagements foster dialogue and collaboration that benefit not only our two nations but the wider SADC community.”

Hon. Mtolo is expected to hold brief discussions with various dignitaries on the sidelines of the event, focusing on agricultural innovation, climate resilience, and investment in sustainable farming practices across the region.

The ceremony marks a significant moment for Malawi as it ushers in a new administration under President Peter Mutharika, with leaders from across the continent in attendance to express solidarity and commitment to democratic governance.
