Chilanga Cement Showcases Bold K18m Investment in ECO Waste Solutions

Chilanga Cement Plc has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental stewardship and circular economy practices by hosting a high-level site visit at its Chilanga plant through its waste management brand, the ECO Unit.

The event brought together stakeholders from banking, agriculture, telecommunications, mining, manufacturing, civil society, and environmental organisations, highlighting the importance of cross-sector collaboration in tackling waste management challenges.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Plant Manager, Mr Jonas Kaonga, highlighted Chilanga Cement’s long-term vision for sustainability. He revealed that the company invested K18 million in the ECO Unit last year, including the purchase of a state-of-the-art shredder with the capacity to process two tonnes of waste per hour.

“This bold investment enhances our ability to manage non-recyclable plastic waste, transforming it into valuable resources while protecting the environment,” he said.

CSR Director, Mr Lee Muzala, stressed the need to reframe waste as an opportunity rather than a burden. “Waste comes from every sector. Today, it is becoming a valuable resource. For us, it presents an opportunity to innovate, collaborate, and build resilient communities and a sustainable country,” he noted.

Partner organisations praised the ECO Unit’s impact. Mr Wiza Chaibela of Zambia Sugar Plc commended the initiative, noting that their collaboration had enabled the safe disposal of over 60 tonnes of waste. “What matters is not just disposal but the assurance that waste is treated in line with circular economy principles,” he said.

Through the ECO Unit, Chilanga Cement continues to align its operations with Zambia’s Environmental Management (Extended Producer Responsibility) Regulations No. 65 of 2018, while contributing to greener, more sustainable communities.
