CCPC Warns Consumers to Beware of Online Shopping Scams
The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has urged Zambians to exercise caution when shopping online, warning that unscrupulous traders are increasingly exploiting digital platforms to defraud unsuspecting consumers.
In a statement to Smart Eagles, CCPC Senior Public Relations Officer Florence Zaza revealed that the Commission has recorded a rising number of complaints from consumers who have fallen victim to unfair online trade practices.
“We have noted with concern that some individuals are taking advantage of digital platforms to engage in unfair practices such as failing to deliver products that have already been paid for, making false claims about goods on offer, or using disclaimers and unfair contract terms to evade responsibility,” Ms Zaza said.
She advised consumers to remain vigilant when transacting online and to be aware of common red flags signalling potential fraud. These include sellers disabling comments or feedback sections, negative reviews, lack of a physical address or contact details, hidden charges, and disclaimers designed to absolve sellers of all responsibility.
The CCPC further stressed that it would not hesitate to take legal action against individuals or businesses engaged in scams or deceptive trade practices.
“We strongly warn those involved in such conduct to cease and desist, as the law will take its full course on anyone found wanting,” Ms Zaza warned.
Reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to consumer protection, she added: “The CCPC remains dedicated to ensuring a safe and fair trading environment for all. We encourage members of the public to report any suspicious online business activities to the Commission.”
