King Mswati III Urges Peaceful and Credible Elections in Malawi
His Majesty King Mswati III of the Kingdom of Eswatini, incoming Chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, has called on Malawians to uphold peace, democracy and unity as the country heads to the polls on 16 September 2025.
In a statement issued on Monday, King Mswati said the elections — which will see Malawians elect a President, Members of Parliament and Councillors — mark an important moment in strengthening the country’s democracy. He reaffirmed SADC’s support through its Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM), led by Honourable Themba N. Masuku, former Deputy Prime Minister of Eswatini.
The SEOM has been deployed to monitor Malawi’s pre-election environment, polling day, and post-election period, in line with the revised SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections (2021). The principles, adopted by all Member States, promote transparency, credibility, inclusivity, and peaceful democratic processes.
“Malawi has a long-standing tradition of peace and stability. I am confident that during and after these elections, Malawi will maintain its reputation as a peaceful nation that upholds democratic principles,” said King Mswati.
He further urged Malawians to turn out in large numbers to exercise their right to vote and called on political leaders and their supporters to respect the will of the people and to resolve disputes through legal channels.
The King concluded by extending his best wishes to Malawi, expressing hope that the elections will not only consolidate democracy but also foster national unity and prosperity.
