Zambia Launches First-Ever ASM Conference to Unlock Mining Potential

Zambia has opened a new chapter for artisanal and small-scale miners with the launch of the country’s first-ever Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) Conference, officially opened this morning by Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, Hon. Paul C. Kabuswe.

The conference, held under the theme “Unlocking ASM Potential for Inclusive and Sustainable Development,” is the direct outcome of President Hakainde Hichilema’s vision to reorganise and empower this critical sub-sector, transforming it into a key driver of national economic growth.

Addressing delegates, Mr Kabuswe underscored the vital role ASM plays in sustaining rural livelihoods and local economies through the mining of minerals such as gold, emeralds, copper, and amethyst.

He described the event as a call to action to transform ASM into a productive and responsible industry that not only contributes to national development but also safeguards the environment and social interests.

The Minister emphasised that the gathering provides a strategic platform for building partnerships, sharing knowledge, and designing practical strategies to ensure a sustainable future for all Zambians engaged in mining.

The conference has brought together miners, government agencies, financial institutions, and experts from Zambia and abroad, reflecting growing recognition of ASM’s potential to boost inclusive and sustainable development.
