UK Applauds Zambia’s Resilient Emergency Response
The United Kingdom has commended the Zambian Government for its resilience and effectiveness in responding to drought and other emergencies.
British High Commissioner to Zambia, Ms Rebecca Terzeon, praised the government’s commitment to protecting the poor and vulnerable through social protection initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods. She made the remarks during a courtesy call on Copperbelt Minister, Mr Elisha Matambo.
Ms Terzeon underscored the importance of strong bilateral ties between the UK and Zambia, which have supported the successful implementation of social protection programmes such as Keeping Girls in School (KGS), Supporting Women’s Livelihoods (SWL), and the Social Cash Transfer (SCT).
During her visit to Masaiti District, where she met social protection beneficiaries, the High Commissioner further applauded Zambia’s efforts to build resilient communities through the rollout of these initiatives.
In response, Mr Matambo hailed the UK as an “all-weather friend” during times of crisis. He highlighted Zambia’s progress in various sectors under President Hakainde Hichilema’s leadership, noting the socio-economic benefits being realised across the country.
Mr Matambo also expressed appreciation for the UK’s continued support to social protection interventions, describing them as a “game changer” in improving the lives of citizens not only on the Copperbelt but nationwide.
