Chapula Polytechnic College Set to Transform Skills Development in Lufwanyama
Construction of Chapula Polytechnic College in Lufwanyama District is progressing steadily, with 75 per cent of the project already complete. The US$2.5 million institution, designed to promote research, innovation and technology, is scheduled for commissioning in December 2025.
The college will specialise in degree programmes in gemstone, mining and agriculture, supporting the government’s broader agenda of economic diversification and industrialisation. Once operational, it will provide cutting-edge training and serve as a hub for practical research, boosting employment opportunities and stimulating local economic activity.
The project is being implemented by HUAZAM Construction Company and co-funded through Kajem Mining Company’s corporate social responsibility initiative. Kajem, already recognised for building a nursery, primary and secondary school in Lufwanyama, has been hailed as a model for private sector participation in community development.
Upon completion, the institution will comprise 11 buildings, including modern classrooms, an administration block, a library, a television room and student hostels. The hostels will house up to 180 students in 40 fully furnished rooms, creating a safe and supportive learning environment.
Minister of Technology and Science, Hon. Felix Mutati, said the initiative reflects government’s commitment to building a knowledge-driven economy.
“Chapula Polytechnic is not just a college; it is an investment in Zambia’s future. It will equip young people with practical skills, drive innovation and create a workforce capable of contributing to national development,” he said.
Community leaders have welcomed the development, noting its potential to transform Lufwanyama into a centre of learning and economic growth.
The Ministry of Technology and Science has highlighted that Chapula Polytechnic forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen technical education and enhance Zambia’s competitiveness in key industries.
