ZEMA Issues Stern Warning to Illegal Miners on Kafue River
The Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) has issued a stern warning to illegal miners operating along the Kafue River in Chingola and Chililabombwe districts, directing them to cease all unauthorised activities immediately.
The directive follows an inspection conducted in the Hippo Pool area after reports of unauthorised mining. ZEMA’s findings revealed serious environmental disturbances, including increased water turbidity, disruption of the river’s natural flow, and potential threats to water quality.
“These activities are not only unlawful but also place the ecosystem and biodiversity at grave risk,” said Ruth Kanyanga Kamwi, ZEMA’s Manager of Corporate Affairs. She cited habitat destruction, pollution of water sources, and heightened soil erosion as some of the dangers posed by the miners’ operations.
ZEMA has urged local communities and stakeholders to report any further incidents of illegal mining in the area. The agency has also warned that failure to comply with environmental regulations will attract swift punitive action, including fines and prosecution.
“ZEMA remains committed to safeguarding Zambia’s natural resources,” Ms Kamwi stressed. “We will continue collaborating with communities, law enforcement, and other stakeholders to hold accountable those who degrade the environment.”
The Kafue River is a vital water source for communities, agriculture, and wildlife in Zambia. Authorities fear that continued unlawful mining could jeopardise both livelihoods and long-term ecological sustainability.
