FRA Buys Over One Million Tonnes of Maize to Boost Food Security

The Food Reserve Agency (FRA) has purchased 1,225,215 metric tonnes of non-genetically modified Grade A white maize from farmers across Zambia as of 31 August 2025, Acting Executive Director Justin Chuunka has confirmed.

The purchase underscores the FRA’s commitment to supporting local farmers and strengthening national food security. The maize acquired translates to approximately 24,504,300 bags, each weighing 50 kilograms, reflecting the substantial volume handled by the agency.

To facilitate these acquisitions, the FRA operated 1,586 satellite depots nationwide, ensuring that farmers from all regions had access to sell their maize conveniently. The agency has pledged to continue buying surplus maize to replenish the National Strategic Food Reserves, with all depots remaining open until all designated crops have been purchased.

Acting Executive Director Chuunka attributed the successful procurement to a combination of competitive crop prices, effective agricultural policies, and favourable weather conditions, which collectively contributed to a bumper harvest this season.

The FRA has also urged farmers to sell any excess maize through the agency’s depots while reserving sufficient quantities for household use, highlighting the importance of balancing personal needs with national food security objectives.

“These efforts reflect our ongoing dedication to building robust food reserves that can safeguard Zambia against future food shortages,” Chuunka said.

The 2025 crop marketing season continues to demonstrate the FRA’s role as a key player in supporting farmers, stabilising markets, and ensuring that Zambia maintains adequate strategic food reserves for the nation.
