Evan Roos Shrugs Off Springbok Snub, Puts Stormers First

Evan Roos has brushed aside disappointment at being overlooked for Springbok selection, insisting his focus lies firmly with the Stormers and their preparations for the United Rugby Championship (URC).

The powerful No. 8 was a surprise omission from the Bok squad to face the All Blacks this weekend, despite Jasper Wiese’s continued suspension leaving the side without a specialist eighth man. While fans and pundits have questioned the decision, Roos remains unshaken.

“I feel like I have nothing to prove,” Roos told SportsBoom.co.za. “My main focus now is the pre-season and trying to get better. The next game on the calendar is on the 23rd of September against Leinster here at the DHL Stadium.”

While Western Province endure a winless Currie Cup campaign, Roos views the competition as an important platform for younger players.

“Personally, I think with those young guys getting that crucial experience playing senior rugby isn’t bad at all. Obviously, the results aren’t going our way, but there is development and players getting a taste of senior rugby,” he explained.

“By having those young guys playing senior rugby, we build a squad. It helps with proper rotations of players, and guys can have rest or off time. Yes, it is a baptism of fire, but I just hope people can understand the vision.”

Off the field, Roos is celebrating the Stormers’ new partnership with Adidas, a brand he has been associated with for several years.

“The Adidas looks amazing on the jersey! It’s a dream to play with the Adidas brand,” he said. “I’ve worked with them for about four to five years and I know the effort they put in for their players. Having that backing for the team and myself makes things so much better.”

While the Springboks face the All Blacks in a decisive Rugby Championship clash, Roos has his sights set on Irish powerhouse Leinster later this month.

“Every day I’m trying to work and get better on the small things. If I can improve every day, I’ll be happy,” he said.

For now, the Bok jersey can wait. Roos’ mission is clear: to drive the Stormers forward, mentor rising stars, and let his performances do the talking.
