Zambia Emerging as Regional Leader in Fight Against Illicit Financial Crimes

Zambia has been hailed as a shining example in the regional fight against illicit financial crimes, with the Director General of the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC), Mr Clement Kapalu, reaffirming the country’s strong commitment to good governance and financial integrity.

Speaking during a courtesy call on the Zambian Embassy in Ethiopia, Mr Kapalu underscored that illicit financial crimes are not merely a domestic concern but a regional and international threat with far-reaching consequences.

He urged Zambian diplomatic staff to remain vigilant and proactive in curbing financial crimes that could undermine economic stability.

“Financial crimes affect more than national economies; they erode trust, undermine governance and hinder regional progress. Zambia must remain steadfast in leading efforts to safeguard transparency,” Mr Kapalu said.

He called for enhanced collaboration between Zambia’s diplomatic missions and oversight institutions, noting that such partnerships were critical to ensuring the country remains a leader in promoting financial integrity.

In welcoming him, Zambia’s Charge d’Affaires in Addis Ababa, Mr Tom Michelo, commended the FIC for its crucial role in protecting the national economy. He also urged the Centre to continue equipping missions abroad with timely intelligence and capacity-building support to strengthen their ability to combat illicit financial activities.

“Access to accurate and timely information will empower our Missions to contribute more effectively to Zambia’s anti-financial crimes agenda,” Mr Michelo noted.

Mr Kapalu is currently in Ethiopia to participate in the Eastern and Southern Africa Anti-Money Laundering Group (ESAAMLG) 50th Task Force of Senior Officials, the 25th Council of Ministers Meetings, and the 8th Public-Private Sector Dialogue Forum. These gatherings bring together key regional and international stakeholders to bolster cooperation in tackling money laundering and illicit financial flows.
