CEJ to Host National Climate and Environment Justice Rally in Lusaka
The Centre for Environment Justice (CEJ) has announced it will host the Climate and Environment Justice Rally 2025 on 10 October at Woodlands Stadium in Lusaka, bringing together hundreds of stakeholders to demand urgent and inclusive action on Zambia’s escalating climate crisis.
Themed “Justice Has No Borders, United for a Greener Tomorrow”, the rally is being billed as a nationwide mobilisation for climate and environmental justice. CEJ Executive Director, Maggie Mapalo Mwape, said the event would amplify the voices of those most affected by environmental shocks such as prolonged droughts, erratic rainfall, flash floods, deforestation and water scarcity.
“These shocks are not gender neutral. Women, young people and rural communities are disproportionately affected, yet they are often excluded from the very decisions that determine their future,” Ms Mwape said.
She described the rally as a strategic platform to raise awareness of the links between environmental degradation, climate change and social inequality. It will also highlight community-led solutions and push for stronger, gender-responsive environmental governance from government, the private sector and international partners.
The rally is expected to bring together over 600 delegates from all ten provinces, including community representatives, civil society organisations, faith and traditional leaders, youth and student groups, private sector partners, government officials, UN agencies, media, artists and cultural influencers.
Attendees can expect testimonies from climate-affected communities, policy discussions with decision-makers and creative performances designed to inspire action. CEJ will also launch consolidated advocacy calls-to-action aimed at shaping national policy and practice beyond the event.
Ms Mwape said the rally’s objectives include mobilising solidarity across provinces, strengthening grassroots networks and securing tangible outcomes such as greater policy attention to climate justice and broader media engagement. A 30-day countdown campaign will precede the event, with announcements of strategic partners and a series of media activities to build momentum.
“This rally is not just about making a statement. It is about securing concrete outcomes for a just and sustainable future,” she said. “We invite everyone—students, farmers, artists, faith leaders, businesses and civil society—to join us. Together, we will show that climate and environmental action without justice is no action at all.”
