Zambia Shuts Down Two Chinese Mines Over Illegal Gold, Copper Processing

The Zambian Government has suspended operations at two Chinese-operated mines in Kasempa District, North-Western Province, after uncovering illegal processing of gold and copper ore.

The affected mines, Sino Octascene Mine and Ken Reliable, were found processing minerals without the required mineral processing licences. Officials discovered substantial stockpiles of gold and copper-containing ore at the sites, piled up and ready for processing.

The violations were revealed during an inspection led by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development, Dr Hapenga Kabeta, together with officials from the Mine Safety Department.

Dr Kabeta stated that the sources of the stockpiled ore will be further investigated, warning that any related illegalities would be “sternly dealt with”. Investigations showed that the companies had been conducting unauthorised processing of minerals for an unspecified period.

When questioned, mine representatives reportedly failed to provide satisfactory explanations or produce the necessary documentation for their activities.

In response, the Ministry has seized the ore stockpiles and directed law enforcement officers to secure the materials until proper documentation is provided.

Dr Kabeta reiterated government’s commitment to curbing illegal mining, particularly in the gold sector, stressing that transparency in mineral trade is vital for Zambia’s national development.

He added that the Ministry is strengthening monitoring mechanisms for mineral processing plants across the country to ensure compliance with regulations.
