SADC Announces 2025 Media and Essay Competition Winners

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has announced the winners of the 2025 SADC Media Awards, the Tertiary Institution Essay Competition and the Secondary School Essay Competition, recognising outstanding contributions to regional integration, innovation, and development.

In the Secondary School Essay Competition, learners were asked to write a 1,000-word essay on the topic: “How can innovation enhance SADC industrialisation and sustainable economic growth and development?”

The overall winner, receiving US$1,500, was Mr. Crispin Mulokozi Kamugisha from the United Republic of Tanzania. Ms. Angel Gofaone Madome of Botswana won second prize with US$1,000, while Ms. Noluthando Mlondo of South Africa claimed third prize with US$750.

The Tertiary Institution Essay Competition challenged students to produce a 4,000-word essay on: “What impact do you believe the SADC Founders’ and Frontline States’ footprints have had on the Southern African Political and Socio-economic discourse to date?”

The top award of US$2,000 went to Ms. Ntsoaki Suzan Kholumo from the Kingdom of Lesotho. Ms. Danai Theodora Kwedza of Zimbabwe earned second prize with US$1,500, while Ms. Boitumelo Khotlele, also from Lesotho, took third place with US$1,000.

Meanwhile, in the 2025 SADC Media Awards, adjudicators selected 29 finalists across four categories: Print Journalism, Television Journalism, Radio Journalism and Photojournalism.

  • In Print Journalism, the overall prize of US$2,500 was awarded to Ms. Veronica Gwaze of Zimbabwe, with Mr. Domingos Paulo Diniz Simão of Angola taking second place.
  • In Television Journalism, Mr. Thabo Harry Rakhomo of Lesotho emerged overall winner, while Ms. Kumbukani Barbra Kajumie of Malawi received second prize.
  • The Radio Journalism award went to Mr. Launcelot Mpho Lakaje of South Africa, with Mr. Innocent Kumchedwa of Malawi in second place.
  • In Photojournalism, Zimbabwe’s Mr. Kudakwashe Hunda won the overall prize, and Mr. Roy Nkosi of Malawi took second position.

SADC congratulated all winners for their creativity, commitment, and dedication to advancing the region’s vision of integration, cooperation and sustainable development.
