ZRA Recovers Over K1.1M in Evaded Taxes from Chinese Firm

The Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has recovered more than K1.1 million in taxes from Chinese Commercial Trading Centre Limited, following the company’s conviction on multiple counts of tax evasion.

ZRA Corporate Communications Manager, Oliver Nzala, said the recovery came after the Lusaka Economic and Financial Crimes Court (EFCC) found the company guilty on five counts of furnishing false returns and statements, contrary to sections 43 and 46A of the Value Added Tax Amendment Act No. 15 of the Laws of Zambia.

According to the facts presented in court, between January 2020 and December 2021, the company, in collusion with others, submitted false tax invoice numbers to the ZRA. These invoices falsely indicated that the company had received taxable supplies from various firms, enabling it to fraudulently reclaim Value Added Tax (VAT) amounting to K1,183,852.

On 11 August 2025, when the matter came up for continued trial before Honourable Anna Vomvas Holland, presiding as the EFCC, the accused invoked provisions under the Plea Negotiations and Agreements Act No. 20 of 2010. The court accepted the plea and ordered the company to pay K1,263,852.69, comprising the evaded taxes, K80,000 in prosecution costs, and a K40,000 fine.

Mr Nzala emphasised that the ZRA has intensified its fight against economic sabotage through tax evasion and warned that offenders will face stringent action.
