Airtel, Vodacom Join Forces to Boost Africa’s Digital Connectivity
Airtel Africa and Vodacom Group have signed a strategic infrastructure-sharing agreement in key African markets, including Mozambique, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), subject to regulatory approvals.
The landmark deal will see the two telecommunications giants share fibre networks and tower infrastructure to accelerate the roll-out of digital services, expand connectivity, and reduce infrastructure costs. The collaboration is expected to improve internet speeds, enhance service reliability, and broaden access to digital services, particularly in underserved communities, helping to bridge the continent’s digital divide.
Vodacom Group Chief Executive Officer, Shameel Joosub, described the partnership as “a proactive step towards a sustainable, inclusive, and connected digital future for Africa,” adding that the initiative aligns with Vodacom’s ambition to connect 260 million customers by 2030.
Airtel Africa Chief Executive Officer, Sunil Taldar, emphasised the importance of collaboration, even among competitors, to meet growing demand for high-speed, low-latency networks. “Working with Vodacom, we will open greater access to digital and financial opportunities, transforming the lives of our customers while ensuring network availability, even in the remotest locations,” he said.
The agreement is set to facilitate the faster deployment of 4G and 5G technologies, improve network performance, and extend mobile, fixed, and financial services across a broader footprint on the continent.
