Zambia Marks 20 Years of Sport in Action’s Youth Impact.

The Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts joined Sport in Action (SIA), the Wallace Group of Universities, and the Duke of Edinburgh Project in celebrating 20 years of a transformative partnership that has reshaped sports development and youth empowerment in Zambia.

The anniversary celebration, held in Lusaka, marked two decades of impactful collaboration that has built sports infrastructure, developed young athletes and leaders, and boosted the local economy. Representing the Ministry, Permanent Secretary Kangwa Chileshe delivered a keynote address on behalf of Hon. Elvis Nkandu, MP, Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts.

“The Government commends Sport in Action and the Wallace Group for their outstanding contribution to grassroots sports and youth empowerment. Such initiatives are shaping a better Zambia and a brighter tomorrow for our children,” said Mr. Chileshe.

Since its launch in 2005, the SIA-Wallace Group partnership has delivered impressive results. Over 20 sports facilities have been built or renovated in Lusaka and Kabwe, including basketball, netball, and volleyball courts, as well as a swimming pool at David Kaunda STEM School.

The initiative has invested K15 million in infrastructure and equipment, benefiting both communities and national sports associations. Thousands of young Zambians have been trained as athletes, coaches, referees, and community leaders. Notable examples include Kelvin Mulenga (U18 Basketball), Catherine Nkandu (U21 Netball), and FIFA referee Patricia Banda.

In addition to athletic development, the partnership has contributed to economic growth. It has generated approximately K3 million annually in sports tourism, largely due to the influx of international volunteers and visitors. The use of local contractors and suppliers has further boosted the domestic economy.

The program has also created opportunities for leadership and entrepreneurship through initiatives such as Girls in Action and the Duke of Edinburgh Project, helping to build life skills and community engagement among Zambia’s youth.

Mr. Chileshe reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting sports-driven youth programs across the country. He emphasized that sport remains a powerful tool for social change, community building, and national development.

“Cheers to 20 years of partnership, impact, and sports excellence. We look forward to even greater strides in the years ahead,” he concluded.
