Zambia and Botswana Launch Historic Bi-National Commission
Zambia and Botswana have marked a new chapter in bilateral relations with the launch of the Inaugural Session of the Bi-National Commission (BNC), held at State House in Lusaka. The historic meeting was co-chaired by President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia and President Advocate Duma Gideon Boko of Botswana.
The formation of the BNC signals an upgrade from the previous Joint Permanent Commission of Cooperation, introducing a more robust platform for strategic dialogue and alignment of development priorities.
Both leaders highlighted the importance of strengthening economic cooperation, promoting political stability, and implementing cross-border initiatives that benefit citizens in both countries.
The Inaugural Session followed a preparatory Ministerial Meeting held at Mulungushi International Conference Centre, co-chaired by Zambia’s Foreign Minister Hon. Mulambo Haimbe and Botswana’s Foreign Minister Hon. Dr. Phenyo Butale.
Ministers from both governments reaffirmed commitments to collaboration in sectors such as agriculture, trade, tourism, infrastructure, health, mineral development, and climate resilience.
President Hichilema expressed gratitude to Botswana for supporting Zambia’s candidate for the African Development Bank presidency and emphasized the need for stronger economic ties and regional integration.
He also thanked President Boko for accepting the invitation to attend the 97th Agricultural and Commercial Show in Lusaka as Guest of Honour on August 2.
President Boko welcomed the elevation of bilateral relations through the BNC, describing it as a symbol of shared values, unity, and common development goals. He noted that the commission will serve as a framework to track the implementation of agreements and foster high-level cooperation.
