Kansanshi Mining Claims Second Place in Prestigious First Aid Competition
Despite fielding an entirely new team as required of defending champions, Kansanshi Mining delivered an impressive performance at the recent First Aid Competition, scoring 85% and securing second place. Lumwana Mine took the top spot with a score of 89%.
Teza Kasengele, Kansanshi’s Safety Manager, expressed pride in the team’s achievement. “Coming second with a brand-new team demonstrates the strength of our training systems. We had only two experienced members and four new ones, yet the team rose to the occasion and outperformed some of the most established names in the industry,” he said.
Mr. Kasengele emphasized that Kansanshi’s commitment to first aid goes beyond competition. “Our goal is to ensure every employee can respond quickly and effectively. First aid saves lives, and this result confirms we are on the right path. While proud, we remain focused on training more first-aiders across the site and aiming for the top spot next year.”
The competition was officiated by the Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, Paul Kabuswe, who urged mining companies to embrace digital safety solutions. “Mining houses must integrate technology in workplace safety. Embrace digital tools that improve access to first aid and empower workers with life-saving skills,” he said.
Supporting this call, Zambia Chamber of Mines President Anthony Malenga highlighted the potential of mobile applications, simulations, and real-time training tools in enhancing first aid readiness in the mining sector.
