President Hichilema Vows Crackdown on Illegal Mining, Pledges Youth Empowerment

President Hakainde Hichilema has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to combating illegal mining and creating safe, sustainable opportunities for Zambia’s youth.

Speaking in response to recent unrest in Chingola and the gold rush in Mufumbwe, the President described the incidents as wake-up calls for stronger enforcement in the mining sector.

He expressed sorrow over the loss of life in Chingola and called for a structured and transparent licensing system to ensure mining benefits Zambians equitably.

“Our natural resources are a blessing,” the President said. “But we want our young people working in safe, legal, and well-paying jobs, not risking their lives in hazardous, unregulated mines.”

To address these challenges, President Hichilema has established an inter-ministerial committee chaired by Vice-President Mutale Nalumango. The committee will oversee illegal mining issues and investigate recent pollution in the Copperbelt.

He urged law enforcement agencies to act decisively against hooliganism and illegal mining, citing its risks to public safety and the environment. The President also reassured affected communities that those responsible for pollution would be held accountable, with compensation and land restoration measures already underway.

“At the core of our strategy is job creation and economic growth,” he stated. “We remain committed to empowering young people and ensuring Zambia’s resources build a secure, prosperous future for all.”

The President concluded by reaffirming his constitutional duty to protect the safety and welfare of every citizen.
