Extend First-Aid Training to Domestic Workers, Urges Labour PS
The Ministry of Labour and Social Security, in collaboration with the Zambia Red Cross Society, has launched a Basic First-Aid Training programme for its staff to enhance workplace safety and emergency preparedness.
Speaking at the official opening of the training held on July 29, 2025, Permanent Secretary Zechariah Luhanga underscored the importance of first-aid skills not only in the workplace but also at home.
He emphasized that emergencies can occur anywhere, making it vital for all households—especially domestic workers, to be equipped with life-saving knowledge.
“Emergencies can happen anywhere, not just in offices or public places, but in our homes. I urge everyone to ensure that domestic workers and other household members are also trained in first aid. They are often the first to respond when something happens at home,” said Mr. Luhanga.
He noted that the Ministry, as the lead institution in occupational safety and health, must lead by example, not only by enforcing safety regulations but also by practicing the standards it promotes.
Zambia Red Cross Society Secretary General Cosmas Sakala echoed the importance of equipping people with emergency response skills.
He said the Society is working to empower individuals across workplaces, communities, and homes to ensure prompt and effective responses to health emergencies.
Meanwhile, Acting Director of Occupational Safety and Health Services George Mukosiku highlighted that the training is part of the Ministry’s broader initiative to build capacity and ensure that key personnel can confidently respond in crisis situations.
