Kenyan Students Return Home Inspired from Huawei’s ‘Seeds for the Future’ Tech-Culture Program in China
Five top-performing Kenyan university students have returned from an immersive week in China as part of Huawei’s global Seeds for the Future 2025 program, a flagship initiative aimed at nurturing ICT talent and fostering international collaboration.
Held from July 21–25, the program brought together students from Kenya, Brazil, Portugal, Madagascar, Namibia, and Côte d’Ivoire for a cutting-edge technology and cultural exchange experience.
Representing Kenya were Shem Machii Ngunjiri (Dedan Kimathi University of Technology), Sophy Cherono Rop (United States International University–Africa), Huldah Mwihaki Kaura (Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology), Mungai Erick Gachuhi (Moi University), and Samuel Ochor Ogeno (University of Nairobi).
During the program, students explored emerging technologies including 5G, Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, and Smart City solutions. They visited Huawei’s innovation hubs and R&D centers, as well as global drone leader DJI’s headquarters in Shenzhen.
Reflecting on the experience, Samuel Ochor described it as transformative: “A seed starts in the dark, unseen but full of potential. With the right environment, it grows. Thank you, Huawei, for providing fertile ground for our minds.” Huldah Mwihaki added: “It wasn’t just about tech, it was about people, culture, and global connection. An unforgettable journey.”
The students also participated in high-level forums, including a roundtable on entrepreneurship and careers in AI, engaging directly with global experts and industry leaders.
At the program’s closing ceremony, each participant received a certificate of completion. Michael Kamau, Huawei’s ICT Academy Program Manager in Kenya, said: “These bright minds represent the future of Kenya’s digital economy. We are proud to equip them with the tools and global exposure needed to lead Africa’s tech transformation.”
Launched in 2008, Huawei’s Seeds for the Future program is a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative that develops local ICT talent, enhances knowledge sharing, and builds cross-cultural understanding. Kenya has participated since 2014, with dozens of alumni contributing to the nation’s digital development.
As Huawei deepens its commitment to youth empowerment and bridging the global digital divide, the program continues to spotlight Africa’s rising innovators and their role in shaping tomorrow’s tech landscape.
