Ubongo Launches Season 5 of “Akili and Me” with Focus on Emotional Development in Children

Ubongo, Africa’s leading edutainment powerhouse, has unveiled Season 5 of its award-winning early childhood program, Akili and Me, introducing a fresh visual identity and a stronger focus on social-emotional learning (SEL) for young children across the continent.

The new season takes learning beyond literacy and numeracy, aiming to equip children with essential life skills such as recognizing and expressing emotions, developing empathy, and building resilience through fun, relatable content.

“With Season 5, we wanted to go beyond ABCs and 123s and focus on something even more fundamental, helping kids understand and express their emotions,” said Tamala Maerere-Kateka, Senior Strategic Communications Manager at Ubongo. “When children learn how to navigate their feelings, they build the confidence and resilience they need to thrive in school and life.”

Akili and Me’s newest season introduces modernized animation and a refreshed cast of characters, creating a more engaging and emotionally resonant experience for young viewers. Through music, stories, and interactive segments, the program nurtures early cognitive and emotional development in a relatable African context.

In addition to the new TV episodes, Ubongo has launched the Akili and Me Games feature within its Ubongo Playroom app. The app now integrates educational videos, audio stories, eBooks, and interactive games, encouraging self-paced learning and play.

“We know that children learn best through play,” Maerere-Kateka added. “By adding more interactive elements, we’re empowering kids to take an active role in their learning journey.”

Watched by over 48 million children across Africa, Akili and Me has become a trusted learning companion in homes, schools, and communities. Ubongo’s mission is to make learning more inclusive, engaging, and impactful for all children, regardless of location or background.

“Big emotions can feel overwhelming for little ones, but when children have the words and tools to express themselves, they develop the confidence to face life’s challenges,” said Maerere-Kateka.
