Botswana’s President Boko to Visit Zambia for Inaugural Bi-National Commission

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has announced that His Excellency Advocate Duma Gideon Boko, President of the Republic of Botswana, will embark on a State Visit to Zambia from August 1st to 2nd, 2025, at the invitation of President Hakainde Hichilema.

The historic visit marks a milestone in deepening bilateral relations between the two neighbouring nations. It will also witness the inauguration of the Zambia-Botswana Bi-National Commission (BNC), the highest structured platform for diplomatic and development cooperation between the two countries. This commission replaces the previous Joint Permanent Commission of Cooperation (JPCC).

The inaugural BNC session, to be co-chaired by Presidents Hichilema and Boko at State House in Lusaka on August 1st, is expected to evaluate progress on past joint decisions and adopt new Memoranda of Understanding across various sectors, bolstering mutual development and strategic collaboration.

On August 2nd, President Boko will be the Guest of Honour at the 97th Agricultural and Commercial Show, highlighting his government’s commitment to regional trade, food security, and economic integration.

Zambia and Botswana share long-standing historical ties and common infrastructure, notably the Kazungula Bridge, a vital trade and transport artery facilitating the movement of goods across the region. The visit comes at a time when both nations are seeking to deepen socio-economic integration and infrastructure-led development across Southern Africa.

Foreign Affairs Minister Hon. Mulambo Haimbe, S.C., M.P., highlighted the importance of the visit, noting that it reflects the mutual desire to enhance regional cooperation, particularly in areas of trade, infrastructure, agriculture, and governance.

President Boko is scheduled to depart Lusaka shortly after his official engagements.
