Tourism Ministry Warns Against Provoking Elephants in Livingstone

The Ministry of Tourism has issued a stern warning to the public following a disturbing video circulating on social media showing individuals deliberately provoking elephants in Livingstone.

In a press statement released by Nelly Banda, Principal Public Relations Officer, the Ministry described the behaviour as reckless and dangerous, stressing that such actions not only agitate the animals but also endanger human lives and may lead to unnecessary fatalities, including the killing of wildlife.

“Elephants are generally calm but wild and unpredictable when provoked. Such deliberate irritation can lead to aggressive behaviour, posing serious risks to public safety,” said Banda.

The Ministry reminded the public that provoking wildlife is a criminal offense under the Zambia Wildlife Act and may result in prosecution, fines, or imprisonment. Members of the public, particularly those living in or visiting wildlife-rich areas, are urged to keep a safe distance of at least 50 metres from all wild animals, avoid chasing or feeding them, and report any threatening wildlife activity to the Department of National Parks and Wildlife.

The Ministry also encouraged communities to educate children and visitors about the importance of wildlife conservation and responsible behaviour around animals.

“Wildlife is a national treasure that must be protected, not provoked,” Banda said. “Coexistence is only possible when people act with respect and caution.”

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to working with local communities and conservation partners to promote safer, sustainable interactions between humans and wildlife.
