TEVETA Signs 126 Apprenticeship Contracts in Tourism Sector
The Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training Authority (TEVETA) has signed apprenticeship contracts for 126 young people in Zambia’s tourism and hospitality sector, marking a major step in bridging the national skills gap and promoting workforce employability.
The contracts, signed with Falls Park Hotel Limited, Minor Hotels Zambia Limited, Protea Hotels Zambia, Safari Par Excellence Limited, and David Livingstone, will provide hands-on experience and mentorship across various skill areas.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, TEVETA Board Chairperson Ngoza Nkwabilo described the move as a collective commitment to human capital development and economic resilience.
“Apprenticeship training provides practical exposure that helps young people transition smoothly into the world of work,” she said. “I urge more companies to partner with TEVETA to enhance business efficiency and productivity.”
Mrs. Nkwabilo emphasized that Zambia’s attractiveness to investment relies on a skilled workforce and called for expanded capacity in training institutions. She credited the Skills Development Levy (SDL) as a cornerstone in funding employer-based training, allowing institutions to align education with industry needs.
TEVETA Director General Cleophas Takaiza revealed that the K11 million joint investment between TEVETA and 20 employers would support over 1,000 employees, including apprentices, across sectors like tourism, finance, manufacturing, energy, and mining.
“The contracts we are signing are solving real problems for employers. No sector can thrive without the right skills,” he said.
Engineer Bright Sepiso, Head of Training and Research at Kafue Gorge Regional Training Centre, lauded the SDL-backed initiatives as game-changers for workforce development.
He noted that the support from TEVETA had enabled institutions like KGRTC to form valuable partnerships that enhance employee skills and business competitiveness.
