Zambia to Host Global Climate Adaptation Conference in August 2025

Zambia is set to host the prestigious Global National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Expo 2025 from 12th to 15th August 2025 at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka, a milestone that positions the country as a key player in the global climate action movement.

This was announced in Parliament today by the Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Hon. Mike E. Mposha, who delivered a comprehensive ministerial statement outlining Zambia’s preparations and expectations for the event.

Hon. Mposha revealed that Zambia’s selection as the host nation was confirmed during the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan in November 2024. The event will be held under the theme “Innovations in the NAP Process,” reflecting the growing urgency for countries to adopt innovative climate adaptation strategies.

“The choice of Zambia as host demonstrates the international community’s confidence in Zambia’s democratic governance and peaceful environment under President Hakainde Hichilema,” Hon. Mposha said.

The Minister underscored that the NAP Expo is a United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) outreach event aimed at enhancing global adaptation efforts, particularly among developing and least-developed countries. It will bring together over 500 delegates from more than 100 countries, offering Zambia a valuable platform to showcase its National Adaptation Plan (NAP) and attract funding.

Zambia officially launched its NAP in 2023, and it requires approximately US$34.7 billion for full implementation by 2035. Hon. Mposha said the Expo presents an opportunity to mobilize resources, learn from global best practices, and forge partnerships for transformative climate resilience.

“Climate change is a lived reality for millions of Zambians. The 2023/2024 drought severely impacted food and energy security. Hosting this Expo is not just symbolic, but essential,” he added.

The Expo is expected to boost Zambia’s tourism and service sectors while strengthening its international reputation as a hub for global climate and development dialogue.

Minister Mposha concluded by urging Members of Parliament, government agencies, the private sector, civil society, and academia to rally behind the event and collaborate with the Ministry to ensure its success.

“This is a national event of global significance. It’s about securing a climate-resilient future for all Zambians,” Hon. Mposha affirmed.

The 2025 NAP Expo will mark only the second time the event is hosted on African soil, following Botswana’s hosting in 2022.
