Zambia Reaffirms Commitment to Science, Technology and Innovation in Achieving SDGs at UN Forum

Zambia has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to leveraging Science, Technology, Innovation (STI) and Indigenous Knowledge Systems, strengthened by global partnerships, as vital tools to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Delivering Zambia’s National Statement at the ongoing High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Ms. Pamela Kauseni, Director of the Population Department under the Ministry of Finance and National Planning, emphasized the country’s strategic focus on multilateral collaboration and evidence-based solutions.

Ms. Kauseni stressed that despite significant challenges, most notably the 2023/2024 drought which severely disrupted Zambia’s agriculture and hydropower-reliant energy sector, the country has shown remarkable resilience through bold economic reforms, enhanced debt management, fiscal discipline, and improved domestic resource mobilization.

“Zambia remains fully committed to accelerating SDG implementation through domestic reforms in social protection, youth empowerment, and sustainable agriculture,” Ms. Kauseni told the forum, which convened under the theme: “Advancing sustainable, inclusive, science and evidence-based solutions for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals for leaving no one behind.”

She also highlighted Zambia’s foreign policy alignment with equitable multilateral systems that enable sustainable growth for vulnerable economies, adding that global partnerships are crucial to bridging the SDG financing gap.

“As we strive for a better future, we call on the international community to work with us in mobilizing resources, technology, and capacity building. Only through shared commitment can we unlock a prosperous and equitable future for all,” Ms. Kauseni said.

Zambia’s participation at the HLPF reflects its active role in shaping global conversations on development and ensuring its national priorities align with global goals. The country views the forum as a critical platform for advancing inclusive, science-driven development strategies.

The forum, which opened on 14 July 2025, concludes on 24 July 2025, and is being held under the auspices of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

Ms. Kauseni is leading the Zambian delegation to the HLPF, representing the country’s continued diplomatic engagement and determination to build international solidarity toward a sustainable future.
