Minister Mutati Calls for Stronger Alignment of TEVET to National Development Goals
The Minister of Technology and Science, Felix Mutati, has underscored the pivotal role of Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training (TEVET) as a key driver of Zambia’s socio-economic transformation.
Speaking during the Ministry’s second quarter performance review, he described TEVET as the “engine to national development” that must be strategically aligned with the country’s long-term economic agenda and development vision.
Minister Mutati emphasized that meaningful economic diversification, industrialization, and job creation hinge on a skilled workforce equipped with practical and entrepreneurial competencies.
“TEVET produces the skills needed to address our socio-economic challenges. To meet targets such as producing 3 million tonnes of copper and increasing beef and maize outputs, we must reposition TEVET to develop a competent workforce aligned with these national goals,” he said.
He outlined five pillars for aligning TEVET programs with Zambia’s Vision 2030 and the Eighth National Development Plan (8NDP), including measurable targets, collaborative efforts, efficient business processes, adherence to Presidential directives, and regular progress reviews.
Highlighting sectors like mining, agriculture, energy, tourism, manufacturing, and digital innovation, Minister Mutati noted:n“The demand for skilled artisans, machine operators, renewable energy technicians, and agripreneurs is growing. Equipping our youth with these skills not only reduces unemployment but integrates them into the value chain.”
He called for sustained funding, clear direction, and coordination to ensure TEVET fully contributes to building resilient communities, competitive industries, and a thriving economy.
