ZAMMSA Secures 100,000 Vials of Lifesaving Malaria Drug
The Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA) has announced a significant milestone in the country’s ongoing fight against malaria with the arrival of a major consignment of lifesaving medication.
Speaking in Lusaka, ZAMMSA Senior Manager for Corporate Communications, Bradley Chingobe, confirmed that the agency received 100,000 vials of WHO-prequalified Artesunate 60mg on Friday, July 18, 2025. Artesunate is a critical medicine in the treatment of severe malaria and forms part of a ZMW 31 million procurement contract aimed at strengthening the availability of antimalarial commodities across the country.
“This latest delivery builds on a prior consignment of 8,400 vials, bringing the total received so far to over 108,400 vials. These vital supplies will be distributed to health facilities nationwide, particularly in high-burden areas, to help manage and treat severe malaria cases effectively,” Mr. Chingobe stated.
He further noted that 244,600 additional vials are currently in transit from China and are expected to arrive in the coming days. ZAMMSA is working closely with its supply chain partners to ensure the prompt and uninterrupted delivery of all essential health commodities.
Mr. Chingobe emphasized that this effort reflects ZAMMSA’s unwavering commitment to supporting the Ministry of Health in achieving a malaria-free Zambia.
He added that consistent access to effective treatments is key to safeguarding public health and reinforcing the country’s health system resilience.
