BETUZ Denies Political Affiliation, Reaffirms Support for Education Reforms

The Basic Education Teachers Union of Zambia (BETUZ) has dismissed claims linking it to political activity, emphasizing its non-partisan stance and continued support for government-led education reforms.

In a press release today, BETUZ responded to recent remarks by President Hakainde Hichilema referencing the union in connection with a purported meeting with an opposition political party. The union categorically denied any such engagement, stating that it has “never met or held any meeting with any political party.”

BETUZ further clarified that any individual claiming to represent the union in such a context does so without its blessing or authority.

“We remain a non-partisan, professional, and member-driven organization. Our mission is to safeguard the welfare of teachers and to collaborate with the Government of the day in building a fair and effective education system,” said General Secretary Henry Sinkala.

BETUZ took the opportunity to express appreciation for the New Dawn Government’s ongoing efforts in transforming Zambia’s education sector, including teacher recruitment, free education implementation, and infrastructure development. The union commended the administration’s commitment to democratic space, which it said has allowed unions to operate freely and effectively.

Sinkala also condemned the emergence of a fake Facebook page purporting to represent BETUZ and spreading false political endorsements. The union confirmed it has reported the matter to law enforcement under the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Act and called for the perpetrators to be prosecuted.

To its members, BETUZ issued a rallying call for unity and professionalism. “We see you, we hear you, and we sincerely thank you. Your trust is the foundation of our union,” the statement read.

BETUZ concluded by reaffirming its dedication to teacher welfare and national educational progress, pledging continued collaboration with the government and stakeholders for the betterment of Zambia’s education system.
