Minister Calls for Stronger Collaboration with Zambia NGO WASH Forum to Enhance Water and Sanitation Services
Minister of Water Development and Sanitation, Eng. Collins Nzovu, has called for enhanced collaboration between the Zambian government and the Zambia NGO WASH Forum, a network of over 40 civil society organizations advocating for the human right to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH).
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Forum, Eng. Nzovu commended the NGO WASH Forum for its continued support, especially in rural and underserved communities, where access to clean water and sanitation remains a pressing challenge.
“Addressing WASH challenges requires joint action between government, NGOs, and civil society,” said the Minister. “My Ministry remains committed to ensuring sustainable and equitable WASH services for all Zambians, and we look forward to deeper dialogue and strategic partnership with the Forum.”
He emphasized that stronger collaboration would improve sector-wide coordination, leading to greater impact across communities.
During the meeting, Mr. Marlon Phiri, Chairperson of the NGO WASH Forum Board, affirmed the Forum’s commitment to constructive engagement and dialogue with the Ministry.
The Forum’s Coordinator, Ms. Bubala Muyovwe-Mumba, urged the government to prioritise the enactment of critical WASH sector policies and legislation. She also proposed the formation of a joint task force to develop a fair and diversified financing strategy for WASH services.
Additionally, Ms. Mumba called for regular bi-annual meetings between the Ministry and the Forum to strengthen collaboration and accountability.
“The Forum stands ready to offer technical expertise, support capacity-building initiatives, and work closely with the Ministry to ensure sustainable service delivery—especially in areas such as operations and maintenance,” she said.
Ms. Mumba also acknowledged the ongoing support from the European Union, which is co-funding the Water Voices United project alongside the Danish People’s Aid. The initiative is being implemented by SNV in partnership with the NGO WASH Forum.
“Water Voices United is a transformative four-year project designed to strengthen WASH Civil Society Organisations in Zambia. By enhancing CSO roles in governance and advocacy, we are supporting the government’s efforts to achieve the progressive realisation of the human right to water and sanitation,” she explained.
