FQM Hands Over K18.7M Wumi Mini Hospital to Government
First Quantum Minerals (FQM), through its subsidiary FQM Trident Limited, has officially handed over the newly constructed and fully equipped Wumi Mini Hospital to the Zambian Government. The hospital, valued at K18.7 million, is set to significantly improve access to healthcare for residents of Kalumbila Town in North-Western Province.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Minister of Health Dr. Elijah Muchima commended the initiative as a shining example of a successful public-private partnership aligned with Zambia’s development agenda.
“This facility is more than brick and mortar. It is a tangible expression of collaboration, compassion, and our collective vision for a Zambia where access to quality healthcare is a right for all,” Dr. Muchima stated.
He further emphasized that the facility supports key pillars of the 8th National Development Plan and the National Health Strategic Plan 2022–2026 by enhancing local access to quality healthcare and reducing the need for long-distance travel for medical services.
The Wumi Mini Hospital includes a maternity wing, outpatient department, laboratory, radiology unit, mortuary, and essential support services like laundry, waste management, clean water supply, and a backup power system.
FQM Country Manager Dr. Godwin Beene noted that the hospital was built in response to the increasing demand for health services brought about by population growth linked to mining activity.
“This project reflects our belief that mining prosperity must be shared through tangible social benefits like healthcare. The nearest facility offering similar services is 98 km away, making this investment vital,” said Dr. Beene.
He thanked partners such as Bulk Mining Explosives Ltd (BME), INZU Mining Ltd, CG Zambia, and others who contributed to the project. Special recognition was given to Senior Chief Musele Musokantanda IV and the Kalumbila Housing Pastors Fellowship for their community leadership.
North-Western Province Minister, Hon. Robert Lihefu, praised FQM’s role in corporate social responsibility and described the hospital as a welcome addition in a district of over 223,000 residents with only one first-level hospital.
“On behalf of the people of Kalumbila, I extend our heartfelt thanks to FQM for this milestone,” he said.
Senior Chief Musele echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of unity between government, traditional leaders, and investors to bring meaningful development.
“This hospital is a result of open dialogue and shared vision. It shows what we can achieve when we work together,” the chief stated.
The Wumi Mini Hospital is part of FQM’s “Butuntulu Bwa Nyaunda” (Health for the Community) programme. Previous projects under this initiative include the construction of five rural health facilities, upgrades to Solwezi General Hospital, and the refurbishment of Kisasa Rural Health Centre.
