Dr. Muchima Assures Nation: “We Have Enough Medicines in Stock”
Health Minister Dr. Elijah Muchima has assured Zambians that government health facilities across the country are well-stocked with essential medicines and medical supplies, dismissing widespread claims of drug shortages as false and misleading.
Speaking during his visit to Kalumbila District, Dr. Muchima said the country currently maintains stock levels that are 80 percent above the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended threshold for drug availability.
“I want to make it categorically clear, there is no shortage of drugs in the country,” Dr. Muchima stated. “Those peddling falsehoods are only causing unnecessary alarm. Our storage facilities are sufficiently stocked and regularly supplied.”
The minister also issued a stern warning against theft of medical supplies, saying any individual found guilty of diverting or stealing drugs from public health facilities will face the full force of the law.
In his address, Dr. Muchima urged provincial health directors to closely collaborate with the Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA) to ensure timely distribution and availability of medicines, especially in remote and rural areas.
He emphasized that the government remains committed to achieving universal health coverage and equitable access to quality healthcare for all Zambians.
