FQM Celebrates Unity and Wellness at 25th Inter-Company Relay in Lusaka
First Quantum Minerals (FQM) joined over 60 organizations on Saturday, July 12, 2025, in marking the 25th edition of the Inter-Company Relay, a landmark event held at the Lusaka Showgrounds under the theme “Rebuilding Through Sport, Together, We Can Achieve More.”
The event was officially opened by Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts, Hon. Elvis Nkandu, who, on behalf of President Hakainde Hichilema, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to using sport as a tool for national development, youth empowerment, and public health.
“Sport is more than competition; it is a force for social stability and long-term economic growth,” said Hon. Nkandu, highlighting the importance of private sector participation.
The President of Zambia Athletics (ZA), Major Bernard Bwalya, hailed the event as Zambia’s premier corporate wellness platform, paying tribute to founder Elias Mpondela for launching the relay in 1999. “This is more than a race—it’s a symbol of resilience and collective action,” Bwalya noted.
Representing FQM, Country Manager Dr. Godwin Beene highlighted the mining giant’s commitment to employee wellness and community engagement. “We are here not only to support athletics but to promote healthier lifestyles,” said Dr. Beene, who also participated in the 5km walk alongside the Minister. FQM also celebrated a podium finish by one of its Kansanshi-based athletes in the 21km race.
The relay featured a vibrant mix of activities including a 100m CEO sprint, 10km corporate race, tug-of-war challenges, children’s athletics, and exhibition booths. Participants came from across the public and private sectors—government ministries, mining, media, finance, and diplomatic corps—making the event a powerful demonstration of national unity and wellness through sport.
FQM reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that foster corporate social responsibility, youth talent development, and a healthier Zambia.
