Zambia U-20 Girls Crowned COSAFA Champions as Mweemba Hails Rising Stars
The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has congratulated the Zambia Under-20 Women’s National Team for their remarkable victory at the 2025 COSAFA Championship, securing back-to-back titles and reaffirming their dominance in regional women’s football.
In a statement released today, FAZ President Keith Mweemba hailed the young Copper Queens for their outstanding performance, noting that the triumph comes at a time when the senior women’s team is also making waves at the ongoing TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
“On behalf of my executive and the entire football family, I wish to congratulate our Under-20 Women National Team for being crowned COSAFA champions,” said Mweemba. “No doubt the future of our women’s game is bright, and we will continue to invest in youth structures to sustain the success we are experiencing.”
Mweemba also applauded the Zambia Under-17 Boys’ National Team for winning bronze in the same tournament, despite playing up in the U-20 category. He explained that their participation was part of a long-term strategy to prepare for the FIFA U-17 World Cup set to be held in Qatar from November 3 to 27.
“Winning would have been great, but we were more focused on preparing the team for the FIFA World Cup,” he said.
The FAZ president further expressed gratitude to the Zambian public for their overwhelming support of the senior women’s team, popularly known as the Copper Queens, who have already secured a place in the WAFCON quarterfinals.
“We are grateful to the fans, media, government, and many other stakeholders for having rallied behind the Copper Queens. The ultimate target is to make history by winning the trophy, but we have to take it step-by-step,” Mweemba added.
