US Ambassador Gonzales Strengthens Ties with Lusaka Mayor
The United States Ambassador to Zambia, His Excellency Mr. Michael Gonzales, today paid a courtesy call on Her Worship the Mayor of Lusaka, Ms. Chilando Chitangala, in a visit aimed at fostering deeper collaboration between the two nations through leadership and community-level partnerships.
Ambassador Gonzales emphasized the importance of building people-to-people relationships and leveraging shared expertise and resources for mutual benefit. “You have resources, technology, and knowledge, so do we, and when we bring those together, we can unleash things that the world has not seen before,” he said, highlighting the potential for joint innovation and socio-economic advancement.
In her remarks, Mayor Chitangala welcomed the Ambassador’s visit and expressed gratitude for the continued support of the United States Government in key sectors such as health, climate change, education, and economic development.
She noted that USAID initiatives have played a crucial role in addressing some of Lusaka’s most pressing challenges.
The Mayor also reflected on impactful past and current collaborations, including the Millennium Challenge project, which improved water and sanitation infrastructure, and the Youth Climate Change initiative, supported through Bloomberg Philanthropies.
These efforts, she said, underscore the strong and growing ties between Lusaka and U.S. institutions.
Mayor Chitangala further praised Ambassador Gonzales for his leadership in promoting U.S. public and private sector engagement in Zambia’s development efforts.
Ambassador Gonzales, who has served as the United States Ambassador to Zambia since September 2022, reaffirmed his commitment to supporting Zambia’s urban growth and strengthening bilateral cooperation across all levels of society.
