FAZ Commits to Constitutional Reforms as FIFA Induction Closes in Lusaka

The two-day FIFA induction workshop for the newly elected Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) executive committee has officially closed, with constitutional reforms taking centre stage and calls for a more responsive, open, and reform-minded leadership.

Speaking at the closing ceremony held at the InterContinental Hotel in Lusaka, FAZ President Keith Mweemba expressed gratitude to FIFA for empowering the Zambian football leadership with critical governance knowledge.

He pledged that FAZ would initiate a process to review and align its constitution with FIFA’s global statutes.

“We have talked about constitutional reforms. FIFA has made it clear that we need our statutes to mirror the FIFA model. That is exactly what we intend to do—with FIFA’s support,” said Mweemba.

The FAZ president emphasized the need for a cultural shift within the executive, urging members to shed the “business as usual” approach and embrace inclusive dialogue and accountability.

“Our doors must be open to all stakeholders. We must accommodate differing views and accept constructive criticism. Democracy is demanding, but it’s the only way forward,” he said.

FIFA Regional Development Office Manager David Fani reaffirmed FIFA’s commitment to supporting FAZ through its constitutional restructuring journey.

“We are pleased that FAZ recognizes the urgency of this reform. FIFA’s governance office is ready to move swiftly to assist FAZ in aligning its framework with international standards,” Fani said.

Central Province Chairperson Chisanga Pule, who delivered the vote of thanks, hailed the induction program as a turning point for the executive.

“The knowledge we have gained is invaluable. It is now our duty to harness the opportunities made available by FIFA to grow Zambian football,” Pule stated.

Over the two days, FIFA oriented FAZ leadership on key governance principles, the FIFA Forward Program, the Women’s Football Strategy, the Talent Development Scheme, and the role of the Technical Director, among other topics.
