Zambia Commissions Largest Solar Power Plant, Advancing Clean Energy and Community Empowerment
Zambia has taken a major step toward energy independence and sustainability with the official commissioning of the 100MW Chisamba Solar Power Plant in Central Province.
The plant, now the largest solar installation in the country, was inaugurated by President Hakainde Hichilema, marking a significant milestone in the government’s quest to deliver on its promise of clean, resilient, and inclusive energy for all.
“This project symbolizes more than just electricity generation—it represents our determination to secure energy sovereignty and embrace a low-carbon future,” President Hichilema stated during the commissioning ceremony. “It is also a call to action to ensure that this national asset directly benefits local communities.”
Built in collaboration with Stanbic Bank Zambia Limited, the solar plant is a key project under Zambia’s broader ambition to install 1,000MW of solar power by 2025. The facility will not only help reduce the country’s carbon footprint, but also boost agricultural productivity through year-round irrigation and agro-processing support, thanks to a more reliable power supply.
The President stressed the importance of local impact, noting that meaningful employment, business opportunities, and community development must remain at the heart of such investments. “This is how development becomes inclusive and transformative,” he said.
Hichilema also issued a heartfelt appeal to the youth: “Take pride in this national achievement. Own it, protect it, and let it inspire you. This plant belongs to you.”
Stanbic Bank Zambia was lauded for its role in financing and supporting the project. The bank’s partnership reflects growing confidence in Zambia’s renewable energy transition and the private sector’s commitment to sustainable development.
The Chisamba solar plant arrives at a crucial time for the country, as it faces the increasing threat of climate-related energy disruptions. President Hichilema concluded by reaffirming his administration’s pledge: “Zambia shall never again be held hostage by unpredictable weather patterns. We are building resilience, empowering communities, and lighting the path to a cleaner, brighter future.”
