MultiChoice to Launch Micro-Subscriptions for DStv and GOtv Viewers
MultiChoice Group is set to pilot micro-subscriptions, a flexible and affordable viewing option that allows DStv and GOtv subscribers to pay for content access by the week rather than the traditional monthly model.
The digital broadcasting giant confirmed that the new offering has already been piloted in Uganda, with promising uptake, and is now being prepared for phased rollout in other markets across Africa.
Designed to accommodate the financial realities of many African households, micro-subscriptions offer greater flexibility for viewers who may not afford a full-month subscription.
“In Africa, innovation is not just nice to have—it is a survival mechanism,” said Sabelo Mwali, MultiChoice Group’s Chief Technology and Information Officer. “The technology has been rolled out and customers are responding positively.”
Mwali emphasized that this solution responds to shifting economic conditions in the region, where many subscribers cannot commit to long-term packages. “Nowhere are cost-of-living concerns more important than in Africa,” he added.
Southern Region Corporate Affairs Manager, Selina Nyirenda, said the initiative will follow a phased approach to ensure a smooth rollout and address challenges as usage increases.
“We take a phased approach in how we roll out our products and services to maximize effectiveness,” she noted.
Subscribers have welcomed the move. “With the rising cost of living, we need this kind of innovation. It’s a progressive development,” said Matthews Singini, a local DStv user.
Another user, Yohane Zibophe, called it a step in the right direction but urged MultiChoice to also consider launching a pay-per-view option.
