Zambia’s Soybean and Groundnut Sectors Poised for Growth in 2025 – Analyst

Economic Analyst Kelvin Chisanga says that  Zambia’s soybean and groundnut markets are expected to record strong performance in 2025, driven by rising domestic consumption, regional demand, and agro-industrial growth.

Mr Chisanga notes that soybean demand is accelerating, fueled by continued growth in the livestock sector where soybeans are a key component in animal feed. This is coupled with steady meat consumption, population growth, and improved household incomes, all contributing to a resilient and expanding market.

“Human consumption is also a key factor,” Chisanga said, highlighting the rising use of soybeans in edible oil production as Zambia’s economy continues to recover.

He further cited increased interest from neighboring countries, particularly those emerging from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical disruptions like the Russia-Ukraine conflict, as a boon for cross-border trade opportunities.

Meanwhile, groundnuts remain stable, with local consumption levels balancing national output. Although export volumes have averaged just 1,000 metric tons annually over the past five years, Chisanga points to a new growth area—animal feed—which is absorbing more groundnuts into feed production chains.

“This trend has been growing over the past decade and is now adding meaningful depth to the market,” he said.

With both legumes playing a central role in agro-industrial development, Chisanga believes Zambia is well-positioned to advance food security, boost trade integration, and attract greater regional commerce and investment.
